The Place

The Battery New York Eatery pays homage to one of the world’s greatest dining cities, a cultural melting pot of food from across the world. From Korean ribs to Mexican quesadillas to all kinds of steaks, skewers and their own brand gelato, if you want it, there’s a high chance The Battery has it.

Situated on the ground floor of the Kerry Parkside Pudong, it commands a view over the spacious courtyard for some al fresco dining. The unpretentious space houses an even mix of warm-colored high tops, dining tables and diner-esque booths that match the menu for hitting that comfort spot.

The Food

A dish of Broadway Avocado and Tuna Tartare (RMB66) makes for a solid starter to a meal that promises to be heavy on the meat. A ring of fresh avocado topped with yellowfin tuna and caviar is neatly arranged so that each concentric scoop catches a spoonful of all ingredients, plus the olive oil and white wine vinegar dressing that oozes from a pool in the center.

The Battery has a Josper oven – a unique piece of kit that allows for food to be barbequed over charcoal and baked at the same time – essentially, it is to meat what the sixth gear is to a Ferrari. The menu has a page dedicated to all things skewered and ‘Jospered.’

If you’re dining as a group, opt for the Josper Grills Temptation Platter (RMB328). Loaded with one of everything, each bite of skewered meat and seafood is succulent and tender, arriving in a variety of flavors that would keep even the most fickle of diners pleased.

The K-Town Korean-American BBQ Glazed Pork Ribs (RMB158) also come straight out of the Josper, a dish that speaks of NYC’s multicultural heritage. Prepared according to a ‘special recipe’ from Koreatown (New York’s, not the one in Gubei), it would be a shame to not lick up every last drop of that sauce.

No New York Eatery would be complete without America’s most iconic food: the hamburger. The selection on offer ticks all the boxes of a solid burger list, but we opted for the most highly recommended, the Honolulu Burger (RMB88)

Pineapple on burgers divides diners as much as it does on pizzas, but naysayers should know that its sweetness here is curtailed by bites of pickle and raw onion. The patty is well seasoned, and, like its seed-topped bun, is made from the restaurant’s own recipe. No prepackaged food is served here.

The Empire State Truffle Fries (RMB59) are crinkle cut and crunchy, an optional extra that come topped with black truffle, parmesan cheese and diced scallion.

Monica’s Healthy Loaded Salad (RMB59) is a mix of greens, beans, croutons and bacon, the winning ticket for the health conscious. The Cobb & Kebab Salad (RMB78) and the Whitestone Prawn Caesar Salad (RMB79) are fun twists on salad classics.

We opted for the Torched Tuna & Avocado Salad (RMB88), a bowlful of Japanese inspired goodness – seared tuna, wonton crisps, wakame and a whole lot of avocado sprinkled with furikake.

It seems people in New York are just as obsessed with brunch as us Shanghairen are, and the outdoor space at The Battery is the place to be on a weekend morn. Brunch runs Every Saturday and Sunday from 10am-3pm. The plate you’ll see on most tables is the Healthy Brunch Platter (RMB88)

Eggs, fried or scrambled, grilled chicken & apple skewers, Australian beef sausage, beans, herbed mushrooms, mash, broccoli and smashed avocado make this a heavy hitter, but all that veg means it’s relatively guilt free.

For the smaller appetites, go with the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny (RMB82). Two English muffins with scrambled eggs and salmon hold up a generous serving of avocado.

The Cherry Tiramisu (RMB39) is available for both brunch and a la carte. It’s cloyingly sweet balanced by a kick of coffee and a gentle hint of cherry rum.

An equally tasty alternative is the Fresh Fruits and Vanilla Homemade Waffles (RMB68). Tuck into the gelato before it melts into the deep pockets of crisped dough, spooning up the fresh blueberries and mango along the way.

The Vibe

The Battery’s vibe is relaxed and focuses on recharging ones’, well, batteries through hearty food and a setting made for unwinding. Especially geared towards families, the kid’s menu has plenty to keep the young’uns occupied while the adults peruse the delights from behind the bar.

People clocking off from a long day in the office will also find plenty on a happy hour menu that sports cocktails, wine and beers under RMB40 every day from 3-8pm.
